Values
Arts-Based Well-Being values and embraces diversity, equity, inclusion, access and empowerment and strives to ensure gender sensitivity, celebrates multiple languages and cultures, and actively welcomes participation from marginalized, disenfranchised, and underrepresented communities.
Arts-Based Well-Being strives to:
Build a creative, compassionate and inclusive community. The Arts has often been a catalyst for social and political change as well as individual growth.
Increase understanding of other cultures and perspectives. Arts-Based Well-Being values sharing knowledge and behaving in a respectful manner. Sharing traditions from different countries, cultures and perspectives, from visible and invisible illness, learning in nonlinear and more circular ways that can lead to openness, greater inclusion and participation.
Recognizes the stigma and pain that arises from living with trauma, work and life stress, addiction, mental health issues, and the isolation that it can bring when it is not given voice, support and respect. Arts-Based Well-Being strives to turn our vulnerabilities into our strengths, build more compassionate safe spaces inspiring communities to learn ways of using the arts for healing and dealing with the ongoing stressors of our times.
Appreciates the contributions of diverse community members in training groups as we challenge each others assumptions while revealing similarities and finding mutual support.
Land Acknowledgement
My mother told me that my grandmother once told my mother that we are guests on the land that we are on. My family’s history is that my mother, a Holocaust survivor, had to leave her home town in Poland when she was a young girl due to the persecution of Jews during the Second World War. As the child of refugees, I am grateful to live on this territory in relative peace and security. As I learn more about Indigenous culture and history, I and Arts Based Well Being understands that all of its activities takes place on ancestral Indigenous lands. I and Arts Based Well Being specifically recognizes the diversity of the First Peoples of this area and the territories of the Wendat, the Anishnabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Recognizing the history of oppression of lands, cultures and original Peoples, is something I wrestle with along with others. Building towards relationships of allyship, trust and mutual care is vital. My belief is arts-based approaches may provide tools for healing, community making, story-telling, co-creation, mutual care and honouring those who have come before us on our decolonizing journey that we walk together in.
Pronunciation: Wendat: (Wen-dot), Anishnabek: (Ah-nish-inaw-beck), Haudenosaunee (Ho-den-o-show-nee)
